Ronnie O'Sullivan saw off a spirited challenge from 16-year-old Chinese player Yan Bingtao to book his place in the second round of the World Grand Prix in Preston.

The Rocket opened up with a break of 137 and then went on to lead 2-0 before Bingtao produced a response to level after making three half-century breaks.



No 5 seed O'Sullivan, however, got himself back in front with a run of 59 and then secured a place in the last 16 with another impressive break of 128 to win 4-2.

Tuesday's late matches saw Hong Kong potter Marco Fu beat Welshman Jamie Jones by the same score while number three seed Ali Carter beat Zhou Yuelong of China 4-3.

Anthony McGill will next play Fu after the Scot's 4-1 win over David Gilbert.

During the afternoon session defending champion Shaun Murphy saw off Michael Holt 4-1, while Joe Perry, runner-up at the Dafabet Masters, recovered from losing the opening two frames to beat Mark Williams 4-2.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mark King edged out Scotland's Stephen Maguire 4-3 while Welshman Ryan Day defeated 10th seed Stuart Bingham 4-2.
